EU Could Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson States

The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the US on five European individuals involved in fighting digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official has said.

EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe such as the French president accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions targeted figures that were central to efforts to introduce legislation governing American tech companies.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in criticizing the move.

The bans were enacted this week against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, along with several activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

This European legislation is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities contend the regulations are necessary to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.

This row threatens to become part of a much broader existing political and ideological clash involving the current US administration and European institutions.

Additional Updates in the News

In related legal developments:

  • A US district judge has blocked efforts to reduce federal homeland security funding to local governments which resist specific federal immigration rules. The judge stated the case was “another example” of tying government assistance to adherence to directives.
  • Authorization was issued for the dispatch of 350 national guard members to New Orleans prior to the new year, alongside an active border security initiative.
  • A Pacific Island nation has agreed to accept a limited number of migrants from the US in return for additional aid, after concluding a formal agreement with Washington.

Furthermore, a congressional representative has filed a lawsuit seeking the stripping of the current president’s name from a prominent performing arts center in Washington DC.

Analysts have also noted that comments regarding Venezuelan oil align with a broader belief in some quarters of “resource imperialism”, leading to parallels with historical international actions.
