RAF Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with French aircraft in a coordinated attack on an underground arms cache in Syria used by the Islamic State group (IS), per a report from the UK's MoD.
The location, identified by reconnaissance, was believed to be containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was situated in hills just to the north of Palmyra in Syria's central region.
"The RAF jets employed Paveway IV guided bombs to hit a number of access tunnels providing entry to the site... early reports suggest the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.
There was no indication of any civilian casualties in the operation conducted Saturday night and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the MoD added.
The Typhoon FGR4s were backed up by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.
Daesh - referred to as the so-called Islamic State - established jihadist rule over large swathes of Iraq and Syria prior to its 2019 collapse.
"This operation shows our UK leadership, and resolve to operate in unison with allied nations, to eradicate any resurgence of IS and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the Middle East," UK Defence Secretary the minister said.
UK warplanes have performed overwatch operations over Syria to "deter any efforts to regroup" of Islamic State subsequent to its military defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.
"I must thank the personnel of the UK armed forces who took part in this mission for their skill and their courage," Healey commented. "They were part of thousands of British personnel deployed over Christmas and New Year. This mission, to eliminate dangerous terrorists who endanger our way of life, highlights how our armed forces are ready to step up, throughout the year, ensuring Britain's security domestically and powerful internationally."
During December, the American forces executed what it called a "large-scale strike" targeting Daesh sites in Syria, after an attack killed two US servicemembers and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.
The U.N. says Islamic State still has roughly 5-7 thousand combatants in Syria and Iraq.
