A tragic railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the speed and execution of the country's key infrastructure initiatives.
The accident took place on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route built to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.
“We are going to thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this incident,” stated the head of state.
The leader reported that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The president noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.
Key Undertaking of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose time in office finished the previous year. This project was intimately linked to his leadership's developmental agenda for the southern region.
Another massive railway undertaking from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to revitalize the economic fortunes of a relatively poorer part of the country.
Project Execution and Worries
The building of both rail lines was managed by the army, marking a significant expansion of its responsibilities in civilian projects. They were built at an fast-tracked rate, beating predictions to be at least partly opened before the end of that administration.
However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently fueled persistent questions over safety standards.
- Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This includes an earlier accident this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-lethal derailments.
Calls for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the disaster, the leader of a key rival party urged an immediate suspension in the building and running of all similar projects.
This stoppage was requested until the completion of a comprehensive independent investigation. The party emphasized that the loss of life "calls for immediate answers."
In reply, the national leader asserted that the train had been running in complete adherence to all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the development and management of these strategic undertakings.
