Wimbledon Embraces Video Challenge System in 2025.

Wimbledon tennis court with replay system

The tournament joins the American and Australian Opens in employing video review systems.

Replay systems will make its debut at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Competitors will gain the right to question certain decisions from the chair umpire, mirroring the system currently in use at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

The new system is slated for use on Centre Court and Court One for the duration of the Championships and on the remaining featured courts when they are staging singles contests.

This development comes just a year after the AELTC implemented electronic line calling, which effectively ended the centuries-old role of line officials.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Competitors will not be permitted to dispute the call of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the official to re-examine specific decisions, including:

  • Whether a ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a ball made contact with an rival's racket or person on the way past.
  • Potential interference at the conclusion of a point.

Importantly, there is no limit on the amount of challenges a player can request.

Practical Application

An illustrative incident took place in a recent tournament recently, where a top player used the video challenge against Jack Draper.

Draper admitted it was a tough call for the official, but thought his opponent had "played the rules effectively."

The umpire watched a replay and determined the player was responsible for interference, granting the rally to Medvedev.

Growing Trend

Video reviews aren't new for Grand Slams. The system was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open this year.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour plans to have video reviews implemented at all of its tournaments.

Other Changes

Another innovation at The Championships this year involves the addition of graphical cues on displays to complement the audio calls from the ELC system.

This addresses situations where spectators have sometimes been uncertain if a shot was in or out.

In other news, with exactly a century of days to go until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have also revealed an increase in daily capacity at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
